Lion's Mane capsules, powder, extract, or tincture: which should you choose?
Short answer: Powder is ground, dried mushroom that you dose yourself, while capsules contain the same powder in a fixed amount. Extract capsules contain a concentrated extract, and a tincture is a liquid extract with a dropper. No form has been shown to be "the best" in research, so choose based on convenience, taste, concentration, and price per day, and compare labels for the part used (fruiting body or mycelium), the extraction ratio, and the stated polysaccharide content.

"Capsules or extract, what do you recommend?" That's the question we get most often. The answer, however, isn't the same for everyone. That's why I'm comparing all the forms here, including what's in them and how much they cost per day.
What is lion's mane, and why are there so many different forms?
Lion's mane (lion's mane mushroom, Hericium erinaceus) is an edible mushroom that you can eat and use as a supplement. There are so many forms because people want to take it in different ways: in coffee or food, as a tasteless capsule, or concentrated in a small amount. So it's the same mushroom; only the processing and dosage differ.
Want to learn more about the mushroom itself and what research says about it? Read our article on research and facts about lion's mane. This is about something else: which form is right for you.
All forms at a glance
You can find lion's mane as powder, powder capsules, extract capsules, tincture, and gummies. They differ in concentration, taste, and convenience.
Powder and powder capsules are the whole ground mushroom, while extract capsules and tinctures are concentrated. Gummies are easy to take, but often contain added sugars and little lion's mane.
| Form | What is it? | Taste | Convenience | Concentration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Powder | Dried, ground mushroom | Mild, earthy | Measure and mix yourself | Low: whole mushroom |
| Capsules | Ground mushroom in a capsule | None | Fixed amount, easy to take along | Low: whole mushroom |
| Extract capsules | Concentrated extract in a capsule | None | Fixed amount | High |
| Tincture (drops) | Liquid extract with a dropper | Slightly bitter | Under the tongue or in a drink | High |
| Gummies | Chewable lion's mane candies | Sweet, added flavor | Very easy to take | Varies; watch out for sugars |
What is the difference between lion's mane powder, capsules, extract, and tincture?
The difference lies in the processing and concentration. Powder and powder capsules are dried, ground mushrooms. Extract capsules and tinctures contain substances extracted from the mushroom using water, alcohol, or both.
So you use fewer grams of extract per day than powder. After that, taste and convenience determine what fits your routine.
Lion's mane powder
Lion's mane powder (in English, lions mane powder) is dried, finely ground mushroom. Stir it into coffee, tea, a smoothie, yogurt, or oatmeal.

Lion's mane capsules
Capsules (also called lion's mane pills) contain a measured amount of powder. You know exactly how much you’re taking, you taste nothing, and they’re easy to take with you.
Note: a powder capsule is not concentrated. 500 mg in a capsule is simply 500 mg of ground mushroom.
Lion's mane extract
An extract is made by concentrating compounds from the mushroom using hot water, alcohol, or both. An extraction ratio of 20:1 means that 20 parts dried mushroom are reduced to 1 part extract. Not every compound dissolves in the same liquid.
So the method also determines what ends up in the final product.
Lion's mane tincture and drops
A tincture is a liquid extract that you dose with a dropper, under the tongue or in a drink. With a 10:1 ratio, 10 parts dried mushroom are reduced to 1 part extract. Read more in our article about lion's mane tincture.
Lion's mane gummies
Gummies are convenient, but often contain added sugars, flavorings, and relatively little lion's mane. So check the ingredient list and the number of milligrams of lion's mane per gummy.
How much does lion's mane cost per day if I compare powder, capsules, extract, and tincture?
For the four forms below, the price per day ranges from about €0.20 to €1.33, depending on the form and dosage (price on October 15, 2026). Powder is cheapest at 1 gram per day and most expensive at 5 grams per day. At the lowest dosage listed on the packaging, extract capsules and powder capsules both cost about €0.53 per day.
The calculation is always the same: selling price divided by the number of days one package lasts. That number of days is based on the package size and the recommended use on the packaging.
| Product (price on October 15, 2026) | Contents | Usage instructions on packaging | Days per package | Price per day (calculation) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lion's mane powder, €15,95 | 60 g | 1-5 scoops (approximately 1-5 g), once a day | 60 days at 1 g; 30 at 2 g; 12 at 5 g | €15.95 / 60 = €0.27; / 30 = €0.53; / 12 = €1.33 |
| Lion's mane capsules 500 mg, €15.95 | 60 capsules (30 g) | 2-3 capsules once a day | 30 days at 2; 20 days at 3 | €15.95 / 30 = €0.53; / 20 = €0.80 |
| Lion's mane extract capsules 400 mg, €15.95 | 60 capsules | 2 capsules once a day | 30 days | €15.95 / 30 = €0.53 |
| Lion's mane tincture, €11.96 (promotional price, normally €15.95) | 60 ml | 1 ml, once or twice a day | 60 days at 1 ml; 30 at 2 ml | €11.96 / 60 = €0.20; / 30 = €0.40 (normally €0.27; €0.53) |

Price per day based on the selling price on October 15, 2026, calculated independently. The tincture is listed at the promotional price.
Prices naturally change, so if the price is different, just work it out yourself using the same method. And never compare only the price per package. At 5 g per day, a 60 g bag will be empty after just 12 days.
What does each form contain per daily dose, and how can you compare them fairly?
According to the usage instructions on the packaging, a daily dose of powder contains 1-5 g of ground fruiting body, powdered capsules contain 1000-1500 mg, and extract capsules contain 800 mg of extract. Only the extract capsules list a content on the label: 20% beta-glucans and 30% polysaccharides. Powder and powdered capsules do not list a content, so you cannot compare them on that basis.
The amount you take per day should always follow the usage instructions on the packaging. The best-known human study used 3 g of tablets per day (Mori et al., 2009), and the effects of each form are explained in our article about lion's mane dosage.
Polysaccharides are long chains of sugars, including beta-glucans, that naturally occur in the cell walls of mushrooms. An extraction ratio is the amount of dried mushroom needed to produce one part extract.
| Characteristic | Powder | Capsules 500 mg | Extract capsules 400 mg | Tincture |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Part of the mushroom | Fruiting body | Fruiting body | Fruiting body | Fruiting body |
| Processing | Ground, not extracted | Ground powder in capsule, no extract | 20:1 extract, water + ethanol (dual extraction) | 10:1 extract, alcohol-free |
| Content on label | Not stated | Not stated | 20% beta-glucans and 30% polysaccharides (80 mg and 120 mg per capsule, calculated) | Not stated |
| Per daily dose (package) | 1-5 g powder | 1000-1500 mg powder | 800 mg extract, of which 160 mg beta-glucans and 240 mg polysaccharides (calculated) | 1-2 ml |
| Organic | Yes (NL-BIO-01) | Yes (NL-BIO-01) | Not listed as organic | Not listed as organic |
| Taste and use | Mild, mixes into coffee, shakes, yoghurt, oatmeal | No taste, odourless | No taste | Slightly bitter, in a drink or under the tongue |
| Suitable for | For those who want to add it to food or coffee and dose it themselves | For those who don’t want a taste and are looking for a simple ritual | For those who want to take few capsules a day and see the stated content | For those who don’t want to swallow capsules |
With a 20:1 extract, one 400 mg capsule is mathematically equivalent to 8 g of dried fruiting body. Two capsules a day therefore equal 16 g. This is a calculation of the raw material required, not a measure of what a product does in your body.
I don’t think a 20:1 ratio on the label tells you much without a polysaccharide percentage, so I’d always look at both.
Why do some buyers consciously choose not to buy the 500 mg capsules?
Our lion's mane 500 mg capsules contain ground organic fruiting body powder and no extract. That’s the criticism that comes up most often in the reviews. Some buyers expected an extract and were therefore disappointed.
Others noted that taking 2 to 3 capsules a day means you’ll finish a jar in 20 to 30 days.
If you don’t want to taste anything and want to keep things simple, powder capsules are simply practical. If you’re looking for a concentrated form with a stated polysaccharide content, consider the extract capsules instead. Some reviewers also said they didn’t notice anything after a short time (Judge.me, October 2026).
Fruiting body or mycelium: what should you look for?
The fruiting body is the mushroom itself. Mycelium is the network of threads from which it grows, and the two differ in chemical composition (Friedman, 2015). So the label should state which part was used.
Lion's mane mycelium is also an unauthorised novel food in the EU.
We use the fruiting body, and I’d always look for that myself too. Read more about the difference in fruiting body or mycelium.
Hericenones and erinacines
Hericenones and erinacines are two groups of compounds specifically described in lion's mane. Hericenones are found mainly in the fruiting body, and erinacines mainly in the mycelium (Friedman, 2015).
They have been studied in cell cultures in the lab (Mori et al., 2008; Lai et al., 2013). This says something about the substances themselves, not about what a supplement does for you.
Which form of lion's mane is right for me if I'm short on time or don't want to swallow capsules?
If you're short on time, you usually choose capsules or extract capsules. You can take them with water without measuring. If you don't want to swallow capsules, choose powder to add to coffee or food, or a tincture in a drink.
There is no research comparing the forms, so the choice is mainly practical.
- Easy to use, fixed amount: capsules or extract capsules
- Want to add it to coffee or food: powder
- No capsules, but precise dosing: tincture
- Smallest daily volume: extract capsules or tincture
- Lowest price per day: powder at 1 g per day or the tincture (price on October 15, 2026)
If you want to add it to your coffee, I'd just use the powder. That's what it's intended for: when we started with powders in early 2023, the idea was to add them to your coffee, smoothie, or shake.

When is lion's mane in any form less suitable?
If you have a mushroom or fungal allergy, lion's mane isn't for you. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, taking medication (such as blood thinners), or about to undergo surgery, consult your doctor or pharmacist first. Human research consists of small studies, so don't expect guaranteed results from any form.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between lion's mane powder, capsules, extract, and tincture?
Powder is ground mushroom that you dose yourself. Capsules contain the same powder in a fixed amount. An extract is concentrated, and a tincture is a liquid extract that you dose with a dropper.
Is a lion's mane extract stronger than powder?
An extract is more concentrated, so you use less per day. How much more concentrated depends on the extraction ratio, such as 10:1 or 20:1.
Are the 500 mg lion's mane capsules an extract?
No. These capsules contain ground organic fruiting body powder. If you're looking for an extract, choose the 400 mg (20:1) extract capsules.
Which form of lion's mane is cheapest per day?
Powder at 1 g per day (€0.27) and the tincture at the promotional price (€0.20 per serving) are the cheapest, prices as of October 15, 2026. At 5 g of powder per day, the cost rises to €1.33.
Which form of lion's mane is best?
There is no one form that's best for everyone. It depends on your preference, your routine, and whether you'd rather swallow, mix, or drip it.
Can I add lion's mane powder to my coffee?
Yes, that's exactly what the powder is for. Reviewers say it mixes well into coffee and has a mild taste.
