Sea moss gummies vs capsules and gel: what's inside?

Short answer: Sea moss gummies are sweets containing dried Irish moss (Chondrus crispus) or an extract of it, usually with sugar or a sweetener, a gelling agent such as pectin or gelatine, and flavourings. How much sea moss and iodine there is per gummy varies by product, so the label is everything. There is no research comparing gummies, capsules and gel in people: the difference lies mainly in the dose and in what else is in it besides the seaweed.

Sea moss gummies are popular because they are easy and taste like sweets. At GOYU we don't sell gummies ourselves, but we do sell sea moss gel and sea moss capsules. Here you can read what is in a gummy, what to look for on the label and how gummies compare with gel and capsules. What sea moss is and where it comes from is covered in our sea moss guide.

What are sea moss gummies?

Sea moss gummies are food supplements in gummy form: a soft, jelly-like sweet with ground sea moss or a sea moss extract in it. Sea moss is the popular name for Irish moss, the red seaweed Chondrus crispus. In the EU Novel Food Catalogue, Chondrus crispus is listed as not novel in food, because it was already eaten in the EU before 1997 (EU Novel Food Catalogue). In Compl'Alim, the French government list of ingredients for supplements, it is authorised (Compl'Alim).

Some gummies contain only sea moss, others combine it with other plants, such as bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) or burdock (Arctium lappa). So always check which Latin names are on the label.

What is in a sea moss gummy?

Besides sea moss, a gummy mainly contains what makes a gummy a gummy: something sweet, a gelling agent and flavour. This is what you find on labels:

Ingredient What is it? What to look for
Sea moss Ground seaweed or an extract How many mg per gummy, and is it powder or extract?
Sugar or glucose syrup Sweetener and base of the gummy "Of which sugars" per serving
Sweeteners or polyols For example when there is less or no sugar in it Above 10% added polyols, a warning belongs on the label
Gelling agent Pectin (E440, from fruit) or gelatine (animal) Pectin is plant-based, gelatine is not
Acids, flavourings, colours For taste and colour Listed in the ingredients
Other plants Such as bladderwrack or burdock With bladderwrack, check iodine extra carefully; each plant has its own warnings

Fun fact: the carrageenan that occurs naturally in sea moss is itself a well-known thickener. As E407 it comes from red seaweeds including Chondrus crispus (EFSA, 2018). Whether a gummy is made with carrageenan, pectin or gelatine, you can see in the ingredient list.

How much iodine is in sea moss gummies?

That varies a lot and is not always on the label. Seaweed naturally contains iodine, and how much depends on the species, the harvest and the processing. In a Norwegian analysis of 96 seaweed products, 14 supplements contained 5 to 5,600 micrograms of iodine per daily dose. For 54 of all 96 products, one portion or dose already took you over the safe upper limit (Aakre et al., 2021).

Irish moss itself contains less iodine than brown seaweeds such as kelp and kombu. In a Spanish analysis, Irish moss contained on average 3.86 milligrams of iodine per kilo of dried seaweed, with large differences between samples (Darias-Rosales et al., 2020). Bladderwrack is a brown seaweed, like kelp. If your gummy contains it too, check the iodine content extra carefully. According to the ANSES and EMA advice listed in Compl'Alim, bladderwrack is for adults only and is not recommended with heart, kidney or thyroid conditions, during pregnancy or while breastfeeding (Compl'Alim).

Iodine per day (adults) Amount
Recommended amount 150 micrograms
During pregnancy and breastfeeding 200 micrograms
Safe upper limit 600 micrograms

These values come from the Netherlands Nutrition Centre. If the label gives no iodine in micrograms, ask the manufacturer. If you already use other products with seaweed or iodine, or have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication, talk to your doctor first.

How much sugar is in sea moss gummies?

You can read that in the nutrition table, under "of which sugars" per serving. A gummy is basically a sweet, so count it: if you take 2 a day, add the sugar from 2 gummies to the rest of your day.

The label also helps you with sweeteners. A product with a sweetener must state "with sweetener(s)" with its name, and a product with sugar and sweetener "with sugar(s) and sweetener(s)". If it contains more than 10 percent added polyols, such as maltitol or sorbitol, it must state that excessive consumption may produce laxative effects (Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, Annex III).

Sea moss gummies vs capsules and gel: what is the difference?

It is the same seaweed in a different form. Our capsules contain only ground seaweed in a plant-based shell, our gel consists of seaweed, water, lime juice and a preservative, and a gummy is seaweed in a sweet with sugar or sweetener and a gelling agent.

Gummies Capsules (GOYU) Gel (GOYU)
What's in it Sea moss or extract, sugar or sweetener, gelling agent, flavour 500 mg of dried and ground Irish moss in a plant-based capsule Irish moss, water, lime juice and potassium sorbate

Taste Sweet, often fruity None, you swallow it Neutral, with a hint of lime
Vegan Only without gelatine Yes Yes

Which is more effective: sea moss gummies or capsules?

That has not been studied. There are no studies comparing sea moss gummies, capsules and gel in people. Sea moss itself has hardly been studied in people either: most studies are about its composition, about animals and about lab work. What is and isn't known is in sea moss benefits: what's in it and what does research say?

What you can compare are the labels: how much sea moss you get per day, how much iodine, and what else is in it. A gummy with little seaweed and lots of sugar is something different from a capsule with only 500 mg of ground seaweed. Choose on convenience, taste and what you do or don't want to take in.

What do reviews of sea moss gummies say?

Reviews on review sites and social media mainly tell you about taste, convenience and price. They say little about what sea moss does in your body: you don't know how much sea moss and iodine someone took, what else they ate or used, or whether any difference came from the gummy. So read reviews as a taste test, not as evidence.

What should you look for when buying sea moss gummies?

  1. Latin name: does the label say Chondrus crispus? Not everything called sea moss is Irish moss.
  2. Amount of sea moss: how many mg per gummy and per daily dose, and is it ground seaweed or an extract?
  3. Iodine: is the iodine content given in micrograms per daily dose? If not, ask.
  4. Sugar and sweeteners: check "of which sugars" and the ingredient list.
  5. Other plants: bladderwrack, burdock or other additions come with their own points of attention.
  6. Vegan or not: pectin is plant-based, gelatine is animal-based.
  7. Lab test: seaweed absorbs substances from the water it grows in. In the EU, maximum levels apply to food supplements, including seaweed ones, for lead, cadmium and mercury among others (Regulation (EU) 2023/915). Ask whether the product has been tested for them. More about origin in why the origin of your seaweed matters.
  8. Children: gummies look like sweets. Every supplement must say that it should be stored out of the reach of young children (Directive 2002/46/EC, Article 6), and with gummies that matters even more.

Which sea moss does GOYU sell?

We sell sea moss in two forms, both vegan. The sea moss capsules contain 500 mg of dried and ground Irish moss per capsule, wild-harvested and organic, 60 capsules per jar. You take 1 a day, preferably with or just after a meal. The sea moss gel is ready to use, in a 316 gram jar, and adults take 1 to 2 tablespoons a day. The gel is not intended for children.

Both labels say: do not use with a thyroid condition or when taking thyroid medication. Do not exceed the daily dose and don't simply combine them with other seaweed or iodine products.

Summary in 3 points

  • Sea moss gummies contain ground Irish moss or an extract, plus sugar or sweetener, a gelling agent and flavour. How much sea moss and iodine they contain varies by product.
  • Read the label: Latin name, mg of sea moss and micrograms of iodine per daily dose, sugar, other plants such as bladderwrack, and whether there is gelatine in it.
  • Gummies, capsules and gel have not been compared in people. The difference lies in the dose, the extra ingredients and what you find convenient.

Frequently asked questions

Are sea moss gummies vegan?

Only if the gelling agent is plant-based, such as pectin. If gelatine is in the ingredient list, the gummy is not vegan. Our sea moss gel and capsules are vegan.

How many sea moss gummies should you take per day?

Stick to the daily dose on the label and don't take more, even though they taste like sweets. Seaweed contains iodine, and more gummies means more iodine.

Can children have sea moss gummies?

Supplements are not intended for children unless a doctor advises it. Gummies look like sweets, so keep them out of children's reach. Our sea moss gel is not intended for children.

Does GOYU sell sea moss gummies?

No. We sell sea moss as capsules with 500 mg of ground Irish moss and as a ready-to-use gel of seaweed, water and a little lime juice.

Are sea moss gummies the same as sea moss capsules?

The seaweed can be the same, but the rest is not. Our capsules contain only ground seaweed, a gummy also contains sugar or sweetener, a gelling agent and flavour, and the amount of seaweed per piece differs.
