Ashwagandha, valerian or rhodiola: what is the difference?
They are three different plants, each with its own claims (see above).
- Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a root used in Ayurveda, a traditional practice from India. It comes as organic powder, as organic 500 mg capsules and as KSM-66 extract.
- Valerian (Valeriana officinalis): capsules with 400 mg valerian extract.
- Rhodiola rosea: capsules with 500 mg root extract.
How rhodiola compares with ashwagandha is explained in rhodiola rosea: use, research and how it differs from ashwagandha.
Ashwagandha powder, capsules or KSM-66?
All three contain the same herb, so choose one. The organic powder is the cheapest per gram. You stir it into warm milk, a smoothie or yoghurt; it tastes earthy and slightly bitter. The 500 mg capsules are tasteless. KSM-66 is a standardised extract of the ashwagandha root, also 500 mg per capsule. Tips for the powder are in how to use ashwagandha powder, and what to look for when buying in buying ashwagandha in a shop or online.
When do you take them: morning or evening?
According to the label, valerian is preferably taken in the evening, 1 to 2 capsules a day. For ashwagandha and rhodiola the product page gives no time of day, but does say to take them during or just after a meal: ashwagandha 1 capsule or 1 scoop of powder (about 1 gram) a day, rhodiola 1 capsule once or twice a day. A fixed moment makes it easier to keep it up.
Who should not use them?
Do not use ashwagandha if you have or have had a liver condition; according to the product page, the powder is also not suitable during pregnancy, breastfeeding or for children. Valerian is not intended for children and young people under 18, may affect your ability to drive and to operate machinery, and should not be combined with alcohol or with sedatives or sleeping aids. Rhodiola rosea is for adults only, is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding and should not be used for more than three months in a row. Do you take medication or have a medical condition? Talk to your doctor first.
