Best lion's mane supplement in the Netherlands: 7 brands compared (2026)
Short answer: There’s no such thing as the best lion's mane supplement. But you can compare brands fairly on five points: fruiting body or mycelium, extract or powder, stated content (polysaccharides or beta-glucans), organic certification, and price per day. We checked the product pages for all 7 brands in this comparison on October 15, 2026, and all 7 list the fruiting body. The calculated price per day ranged from about €0.16 (on sale) to €1.33, depending on form, dosage, and discount.

We’re often asked what 10:1 or 20:1 actually means when other sellers use these terms. I understand, since every brand puts something different on the jar. So I’ve compared seven brands side by side, including our own products. If another brand offers better value or is cheaper, I say so.
Which lion's mane supplements are available in the Netherlands, and how do they differ?
In the Netherlands, you can buy lion's mane as powder, capsules with ground powder, extract capsules, and tincture. Brands include GOYU, Purasana, Mattisson, Vitakruid, Vitaminstore, Lucovitaal, and Holland & Barrett. They differ mainly in the part of the mushroom used, concentration, stated content, and price per day.
Lion's mane (bearded tooth mushroom, Hericium erinaceus) is an edible mushroom with white, hanging spines. The fruiting body is the mushroom itself; mycelium is the thread-like network it grows from. The two differ in chemical profile: hericenones are mainly reported in the fruiting body, while erinacines are mainly reported in the mycelium (Friedman, 2015).
These compounds have been studied in the lab, not as the effects of a supplement in humans (Mori et al., 2008; Lai et al., 2013).
How did we compare lion's mane brands, and what couldn’t we verify?
On October 15, 2026, we noted only what was stated on each product’s official page or on the page of a major online retailer. This included form, mg per capsule or serving, fruiting body or mycelium, extraction ratio, content, organic status, price, packaging, and daily dosage. If something wasn’t listed, the table says “not listed.”
On October 15, 2026, we found no lion's mane supplement when searching for "lion's mane" on kruidvat.nl. The information for Lucovitaal therefore comes from lucovitaal.nl. The Etos website was temporarily offline that day, so we did not check Etos's range. Real Mushrooms, Opus, and Shyft, which appeared in an earlier version of this article, are also not included.
How do lion's mane brands compare in one table?
The table lists 11 products from 7 brands, with the information shown on the product pages on October 15, 2026. We calculated the price per day based on the package price and daily dose listed on the page, and included the calculation. Note that a lower price per day does not mean the products are equivalent, as their forms and concentrations differ.

Price per day on October 15, 2026, calculated from the product pages. For the GOYU tincture, Purasana, and Holland & Barrett, the promotional price for that day was used. Mattisson powder is not included because the weight of the measuring scoop is not stated.
Prices checked on October 15, 2026. Promotional prices and shipping costs change quickly. For Mattisson, Vitakruid, and Vitaminstore, the price is Vitaminstore's; it may differ at other stores. That day, Lucovitaal also offered a unit online with damaged outer packaging for €5.00. We exclude that exception from the calculation.
Why does it matter whether a lion's mane supplement is made from the fruiting body or mycelium?
It matters for the composition and the regulations. Mycelium is often grown on grain, so part of the product may consist of grain. In addition, the novel food status of mycelium may differ from that of the fruiting body.
A novel food is a food that was not consumed to a significant degree in the EU before May 1997 and requires prior European authorization. All seven brands checked list the fruiting body, and honestly, I think that's a good sign for the market as a whole.
If the label doesn't specify which part is used, just ask the seller. Read more background in our article about fruiting body vs. mycelium.
What do the extraction ratio and content on a lion's mane supplement label tell you?
An extraction ratio such as 20:1 indicates how much dried mushroom was used to make one part extract. A stated percentage of polysaccharides or beta-glucans indicates how much of those compounds the product contains. That percentage is therefore easier to compare than the ratio. Three extracts in this comparison state their content: GOYU has 20% beta-glucans and 30% polysaccharides, Vitakruid has 20% beta-glucans and 30% polysaccharides, and Vitaminstore has 10% beta-glucans and 30% polysaccharides. Lucovitaal and Holland & Barrett list a 20:1 ratio but do not state the content.
Polysaccharides are sugar chains from the cell walls of mushrooms, and beta-glucans are one type of polysaccharide. An extraction ratio is the ratio of the amount of dried mushroom to the amount of extract obtained from it.
A large number on the packaging may refer to an equivalent amount of dried mushroom, not the weight in the capsule. Lucovitaal lists its 750 mg 20:1 extract as "equivalent to 15 grams," and Holland & Barrett lists its 500 mg 20:1 extract as "equivalent to 10 grams." So I would always check the mg per capsule and the stated content. You can read about the differences between the forms in lion's mane capsules, powder, or extract.
How can you check whether a lion's mane brand can prove its quality with a CoA and an organic certification?
Ask for a batch-specific certificate of analysis (CoA) and check whether the EU organic logo and its control code appear on the packaging. A CoA shows values measured for each batch. An organic certification tells you about cultivation and inspection, not the levels of specific compounds.
A certificate of analysis (CoA) is a laboratory report for each production batch that includes, among other things, levels of heavy metals and microbiological contaminants. Of the products reviewed, GOYU (powder and capsules), Purasana, and Mattisson list an organic certification. How to read a CoA is explained in our article about a mushroom supplement CoA.
How do you calculate the price per day of a lion's mane supplement?
Divide the package price by the number of days it lasts at the dosage on the label. A jar costing €18.95 with 60 capsules and 1 capsule per day costs €0.32 per day. At 2 capsules per day, that is €0.63. Only then compare forms and contents.
- Powder: divide the price by the number of grams, then multiply by your daily dose in grams. If a measuring scoop has no stated weight, the price per day cannot be calculated exactly.
- Capsules: divide the price by the number of capsules, then multiply by the number of capsules per day.
- Watch out for sale prices: also calculate using the regular price so you aren't comparing against a temporary discount.
Which lion's mane supplement is right for you if you care about price, organic certification, or an extract?
It depends on what matters to you: the lowest price per gram, an organic certification, an extract with stated content, or convenience. Based on data from October 15, 2026, different brands come out on top for different situations. So our own products are not the most affordable option in every category.
| What matters to you? | Reviewed options | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest price per gram for organic powder | Purasana (€0.17 per g on sale, normally €0.20) | Cheaper per gram than Mattisson (€0.22) and GOYU (€0.27) |
| Small pack of powder to try | GOYU (60 g) | Purasana and Mattisson sell 100 g |
| Extract with stated content | GOYU extract (20% beta-glucans), Vitakruid (20% beta-glucans), Vitaminstore (10% beta-glucans) | Vitakruid is the only one that also lists hericenones (2%) and contains vitamin B12 |
| Lowest price per day at the lowest dosage | Holland & Barrett (€0.16 on sale, normally €0.39), Mattisson capsules (€0.31), Vitaminstore extract (€0.32), Lucovitaal (€0.33) | At 1 capsule per day; GOYU extract costs €0.53 for 2 capsules |
| Only lion's mane, with no added vitamins or minerals | GOYU, Purasana, Mattisson, Vitaminstore | Vitakruid and Holland & Barrett contain vitamin B12; Lucovitaal contains vitamin B12 and iron |

| Without a capsule or powder | GOYU tincture | 10:1 extract, alcohol-free |

What do the labels say about the three GOYU lion's mane forms?
Our lion's mane powder is 60 g of ground fruiting body with the EU organic logo (NL-BIO-01, non-EU agriculture), with no fillers. The recommended use is "Take 1-5 scoops (approximately 1-5 g) mixed with water or coffee once a day". The lion's mane capsules contain 500 mg of the same powder, not extract.
The lion's mane extract capsules contain 400 mg of 20:1 fruiting body extract (water and ethanol), with 20% beta-glucans and 30% polysaccharides. Like the powder, both capsules contain no fillers and have an HPMC capsule shell. The raw materials come from China. We have a CoA for every batch, which you can request via support@getgoyu.com.
For our powder and capsules: Lion's Mane is naturally high in protein** and Lion's Mane is naturally high in fibre**
**Approved health claim (Regulation (EU) No. 432/2012) or nutrition claim (Regulation (EC) No. 1924/2006).
To be fair, our powder is more expensive per gram than Purasana's and Mattisson's. Vitakruid lists the hericenones content as well as beta-glucans. And if you want 1 capsule per day, other brands are cheaper.
Summary in 3 points

- Three extracts also contain vitamins or minerals; check the label if that's what you want, and check the label with Etos directly, as its site was offline on the date of checking.
