Greens powder: what's in it and how do you use it?
Short answer: A greens powder is a mix of dried and ground green plants, such as grasses, leaves and algae, often with added fruit and fibre. You stir a scoop into water, juice or a smoothie. Our Daily Greens contains nine ingredients, including baobab, barley grass, moringa, spirulina and chlorella, and you use 1 scoop (8 g) per day. A greens powder is an addition to, not a replacement for, vegetables.

At GOYU we sell Daily Greens, a greens powder, and the Functional Matcha Blend. You will find both among our superblends. In this article you will read what a greens powder is exactly, what is in a scoop of Daily Greens, how to use it and what to look out for.
What is a greens powder?
A greens powder, also called a greens supplement or green powder, is a powder made from dried green plants. Think of young grass shoots, ground leaves and microalgae such as spirulina and chlorella. It often contains fruit for flavour and a fibre such as inulin. There is no legal definition: every brand decides which ingredients go in and in what ratio.
So always read the ingredients list. It shows which plants are in it and, if all is well, how much of each as a percentage. Without percentages you do not know whether an ingredient is just a pinch or the base of the powder.
What is in Daily Greens?
Daily Greens contains nine ingredients in a fixed ratio. Baobab, barley grass and moringa together make up almost two thirds of the powder. Most ingredients are organic. Per 8 gram scoop, this is what it contains:
| Ingredient | What is it? | Share | Per scoop (8 g) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baobab (Adansonia digitata), organic | Dried fruit pulp of the African baobab tree | 26% | 2.1 g |
| Barley grass (Hordeum vulgare), organic | The young grass shoots of the barley plant | 22% | 1.8 g |
| Moringa (Moringa oleifera), organic | Ground leaf of the moringa tree | 16% | 1.3 g |
| Inulin, organic | A fibre you may know from chicory, among others | 12% | 1.0 g |
| Freeze-dried lemon | For a fresh taste | 9% | 0.7 g |
| Spirulina, organic | A blue-green microalga | 4% | 0.3 g |
| Chlorella, organic | A green microalga | 4% | 0.3 g |
| Ginger (Zingiber officinale), organic | Ground rhizome | 4% | 0.3 g |
| Acerola (Malpighia), organic | A cherry-like fruit from tropical America | 3% | 0.2 g |
This also shows what a greens powder is and is not. A scoop contains about 0.3 grams each of spirulina and chlorella. If you want those algae in a larger amount, a separate powder makes more sense. Daily Greens is meant as one scoop with a mix of everything.
Baobab fruit pulp is a novel food in the EU and was officially authorised in 2008 (Decision 2008/575/EC).
How much fibre and protein is in a scoop?
An 8 gram scoop of Daily Greens contains 3.6 g of fibre and 1.3 g of protein, at 19 kcal. Per 100 grams that is 44.5 g of fibre and 16.3 g of protein:
| Nutrition | Per 100 g | Per scoop (8 g) |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | 975 kJ / 233 kcal | 78 kJ / 19 kcal |
| Fat | 1.9 g | 0.2 g |
| of which saturates | 0.6 g | <0.1 g |
| Carbohydrate | 30.9 g | 2.5 g |
| of which sugars | 10.1 g | 0.8 g |
| Fibre | 44.5 g | 3.6 g |
| Protein | 16.3 g | 1.3 g |
| Salt | 0.7 g | 0.06 g |
That is why we may use these two nutrition claims for this product: Daily Greens is high in fibre** and Daily Greens is high in protein**. Under European rules, "high fibre" is only allowed from 6 g of fibre per 100 g, and "high protein" if at least 20% of the energy comes from protein (Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006, annex). In Daily Greens about 28% of the energy comes from protein.
**Authorised health claim (Regulation (EU) No 432/2012) or nutrition claim (Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006).
How do you use greens powder and make a greens drink?
Mix 1 scoop (8 g) with 200-250 ml of water or juice, or add it to a smoothie. That is what it says on the Daily Greens packaging, and it is suitable for daily use. This is how you make a greens drink:
- Pour 200-250 ml of cold water or juice into a shaker or a bottle with a cap.
- Add 1 scoop (8 g) of Daily Greens.
- Close the cap and shake well, for about ten seconds.
- Drink it straight away and give it another shake in between, because a greens powder does not dissolve completely.
In a smoothie the green taste is least noticeable. A banana, some frozen fruit and a splash of plant-based milk are enough. Do not take more than 1 scoop per day, even if you like the taste.
What does Daily Greens taste like?
Daily Greens tastes fresh and green, with a slightly tart note of lemon and baobab and a hint of ginger. It tastes best cold and well shaken. It contains no flavourings or sweeteners, so it does not taste like lemonade. In water you taste the green flavour most, in juice or a smoothie least.
Does a greens powder replace vegetables?
No. The Dutch Nutrition Centre (Voedingscentrum) advises adults to eat at least 250 grams of vegetables a day, and says that vegetables cannot be replaced by a supplement (Voedingscentrum, 2024). An 8 gram scoop is something very different from 250 grams of vegetables on your plate.
So see a greens powder as something extra alongside your normal food, for example on days when you are on the go. It is no reason to eat fewer vegetables.
What should you look out for with a greens powder?
Look at the ingredients list, the dosage and who should talk to a doctor first. The main points:
- Percentages: choose a powder that shows how much of each ingredient it contains.
- Dosage: stick to 1 scoop per day and do not take more than it says on the packaging.
- Double use: if you also take separate spirulina, chlorella or moringa, count them too.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding, medication: the Daily Greens packaging says to talk to your doctor first in those cases, or if you have a medical condition. For moringa in supplements, the French list Compl'Alim also states that use by pregnant women and children is not recommended (Compl'Alim, 2026).
- Storage: cool, dry and tightly closed, out of reach of children. Do not use the powder if the packaging is damaged.

Daily Greens or Functional Matcha Blend: what is the difference?
Daily Greens is a caffeine-free greens powder for water, juice or a smoothie. The Functional Matcha Blend is a matcha mix with caffeine that you whisk with hot water. The differences at a glance:

| Per serving | 1 scoop (8 g) in 200-250 ml of water or juice, or in a smoothie | 1 teaspoon (3 g) whisked smooth with hot, not boiling, water and topped up with milk, water or a smoothie |
