The Functional Matcha Blend is one of our two superblends. We at GOYU sell it ourselves, so wherever we mention it, it is our own product. In this article you read exactly what's in it, how much caffeine you get, how to make it and who it is not suitable for.
What's in the Functional Matcha Blend?
Five ingredients in a fixed ratio, with matcha as the base. One 3 gram teaspoon contains:
| Ingredient | What is it? | Share | Per teaspoon (3 g) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium matcha (Camellia sinensis) | Powdered green tea | 57.5% | about 1.7 g |
| Maca (Lepidium meyenii), organic | Dried root from the Andes | 20% | 0.6 g |
| Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus) 20:1 extract | Extract of the lion's mane mushroom | 10% | 0.3 g |
| Rhodiola rosea extract, more than 3% salidroside | Extract of roseroot | 7.5% | about 0.23 g |
| Ginkgo biloba 50:1 extract | Extract of the leaves of the ginkgo tree | 5% | 0.15 g |
The blend is fully plant-based and free from artificial colours, flavours and fragrances. Our product page includes these claims, among others: Matcha Blend is high in fibre**, Matcha helps you stay alert* and Maca supports physical and mental performance*. How much caffeine is in the Functional Matcha Blend?
An estimated 33 to 77 mg per 3 gram teaspoon. The caffeine comes from the matcha. A review reports 18.9 to 44.4 mg of caffeine per gram of matcha (Kochman et al., 2020). A teaspoon of blend contains about 1.7 grams of matcha, which comes to roughly 33 to 77 mg. That is a calculation based on the literature, not a measurement of our blend.
For comparison: according to the European Food Safety Authority EFSA, up to 400 mg of caffeine a day from all sources combined raises no safety concerns for healthy adults, and up to 200 mg in one go (EFSA, 2015). If you also drink coffee, tea or yerba mate, count those in.
How do you make the Functional Matcha Blend? Step by step
- Put 1 teaspoon (3 grams) of blend in a bowl or mug.
- Add a splash of hot water, around 80 °C, so not boiling.
- Whisk until smooth with a bamboo matcha whisk or a frother, until there are no lumps left.
- Top up with (plant-based) milk, water or a smoothie.
- Stir once more and drink it straight away.
A bamboo whisk gives the best foam. How to care for, replace and choose one is explained in matcha whisk (chasen): care, replacement and choosing one.
Recipe: iced matcha blend latte
You make an iced latte in two steps: first whisk it warm, then pour it over ice. That way the powder dissolves properly.
- Whisk 1 teaspoon of blend with 50 ml of water at around 80 °C.
- Fill a glass with ice cubes and 200 ml of cold (plant-based) milk.
- Pour the whisked blend over it and stir.
- Want it sweeter? Add a little honey or maple syrup to the warm part, where it dissolves better.

Functional Matcha Blend or regular matcha: what's the difference?
Regular matcha consists only of ground tea leaf. The Functional Matcha Blend contains 57.5% matcha plus maca, lion's mane, rhodiola and ginkgo. Per gram of powder, the blend therefore contains less matcha, and so less caffeine, than pure matcha.
| Pure matcha | Functional Matcha Blend | |
|---|---|---|
| Ingredients | Matcha only | Matcha, maca, lion's mane, rhodiola, ginkgo |
| Taste | Grassy, pure tea flavour | Matcha with a soft, nutty note from maca |
| Caffeine | From the matcha only | From the matcha only (57.5% of the blend) |
| Best for | Traditional matcha and lattes | Lattes and smoothies with one scoop |

Who is the Functional Matcha Blend not suitable for?
According to our product information, the blend is not recommended for children, pregnant women or breastfeeding women. It naturally contains caffeine, and ginkgo and rhodiola have their own restrictions on use. If you take medication or have a medical condition, consult your doctor first.
- Ginkgo: according to the French government list Compl'Alim, the label of products with ginkgo leaf must state that use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not recommended, that you should consult your doctor if you take blood thinners and that use alongside antidepressants is not recommended. According to the ANSES and EMA opinion, also in Compl'Alim, ginkgo leaf is for adults only and not recommended with epilepsy or before a planned operation or other procedure (Compl'Alim, ginkgo).
- Rhodiola: according to the ANSES and EMA opinion in Compl'Alim, for adults only and not during pregnancy or breastfeeding (Compl'Alim, rhodiola).
- Caffeine: if you are sensitive to caffeine, don't take the blend late in the day.
Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. If you also take separate supplements with the same ingredients, count them in.
