When should you take lion's mane: morning or evening?
Short answer: No study identifies a best time to take lion's mane (bearded tooth mushroom, Hericium erinaceus). Most users take it in the morning with breakfast or in their coffee because it's easy to stick to. In the best-known study, the daily amount was divided across three times, so consistency matters more than the exact time.

When we started with our powders in early 2023, including lion's mane, they were intended to be added to your coffee, smoothie, or shake. So the timing was essentially already built in. Still, we continue to get questions about it, such as: "Should I take all the mushrooms at once in the morning, or switch them up each day?" and "Is it for daily use or only when needed?"
What is the best time of day to take lion's mane?
There is no scientifically established best time to take lion's mane. Studies have not compared morning and evening. So people who use lion's mane choose a practical time, such as breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
The time that's easiest for you to stick to every day is the best time for you in practice.
Lion's mane is an edible mushroom that has long been used in cooking in Asia. As a supplement, it comes as a powder, capsules, extract, or tincture. No optimal time has been studied for any of these forms.
| Time | Why people choose this | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Easy to pair with breakfast or coffee | Not on an empty stomach if you are sensitive to that |
| Afternoon | At lunch, for those who eat little in the morning | More likely to be forgotten on busy days |
| Evening | For those who take all their supplements with dinner | In that case, don't combine it with caffeinated coffee |
| Spread throughout the day | This is how it was done in the study by Mori et al. (2009) | Requires more discipline |
Is it better to take lion's mane with or without food?
If you have a sensitive stomach, just take lion's mane with a meal. Some users report mild stomach upset when taking a mushroom supplement on an empty stomach. There is no research showing that taking lion's mane with or without food makes any difference to the absorption of its compounds.
A meal is also a convenient set time. Taking it with breakfast or coffee makes it easier to remember. Read more about stomach complaints and other reported reactions in our article on lion's mane side effects.
Is it better to take lion's mane all at once or spread throughout the day?
Taking Lion's mane all at once or spread throughout the day hasn't been compared in research. In the best-known Japanese study, participants took four 250 mg tablets three times a day for 16 weeks. That's one study using a specific product, so it's not evidence that spreading it out works better than taking it all at once.
The study included 30 adults aged 50 to 80. Half received lion's mane tablets, and the other half received a placebo (Mori et al., 2009). The tablets consisted of 96% dried fruiting body powder. That's the mushroom itself, the part you see growing on wood.
If you're used to taking them at one set time, there's nothing wrong with that. Always stick to the daily dose on the packaging. For how to compare amounts across forms, see lion's mane dosage.
Taking multiple mushrooms or supplements: all at once or at different times?
Whether it's better to take multiple mushroom supplements together or at different times hasn't been studied. So it's mainly a practical choice. I'd just take them at one set time, for example with breakfast, and follow the daily dose on the packaging for each product.
This is what I do too: I take our mushroom complex every day during the day, along with my other capsules. If lion's mane is in more than one product, just add up the amounts.
A customer also asked us whether lion's mane can be taken with MCT oil. This combination hasn't been studied. If you take medication as well as supplements, consult your doctor or pharmacist first.
Can I take lion's mane in the evening without it disrupting my sleep?
Lion's mane itself contains no caffeine, so taking it in the evening is practically no problem for most people. There is too little research to say anything meaningful about a direct effect of lion's mane on sleep. Do pay attention to what you combine it with: lion's mane in an evening coffee still gives you the caffeine from that coffee.
If you feel restless in the evening after taking it, move it to the morning. This is a personal consideration, not research-based advice.
What's the easiest way to take lion's mane powder, capsules, or tincture?
Powder is easiest to stir into coffee, tea, oatmeal, or a smoothie. Take capsules with water, and place tincture drops under your tongue or add them to a drink. The most convenient form depends on your morning routine, since the timing doesn't change depending on the form, only the way you take it.
- Powder: mixes well into coffee, shakes, yogurt, and oatmeal, and has a mild taste according to customer reviews (Judge.me, October 2026). Find recipes in cooking with lion's mane.
- Capsules: convenient on the go and odorless. Take them with a glass of water with a meal.
- Tincture: a tincture is a liquid extract that you measure with a dropper. Learn more about the lion's mane tincture.
An extract is a concentrated form in which compounds are extracted from the mushroom using water, alcohol, or both. Beta-glucans are sugar chains (polysaccharides) from the cell walls of mushrooms, and their content is often listed on an extract's label. Our article on beta-glucans in mushrooms explains how to read it.
Is it a good idea to take lion's mane every day, or should you take a break from time to time?
Whether daily use or taking breaks is better for lion's mane has not been studied. The study by Mori et al. (2009) lasted 16 weeks with daily intake, followed by 4 weeks without it. There is little data on use beyond a few months, so follow the directions for use and consult your doctor if in doubt.
Some people take a break on their own, for example, one week per month. This is a personal choice with no research to support it.
Taking a break is a good time to consider whether you still want to use the product. Read about what other users notice after a few weeks in lion's mane reviews.
When does our packaging recommend taking it?
The packaging does not specify a time, but does recommend taking it around a meal. All three recommend one dose per day, while Mori's study divided the daily dose into three doses.
| Product | When to take it, as listed on the packaging | How often per day |
|---|---|---|
| Lion's mane powder (60 g, organic) | Preferably during or immediately after a meal, in water or coffee | Once daily |
| Lion's mane capsules (60 x 500 mg powder) | Preferably during or immediately after a meal, with water | Once a day |
| Lion's mane extract capsules (400 mg, 20:1) | Preferably before or during a meal, with water | Once daily |
For the number of scoops or capsules per day listed on the packaging and how to compare amounts across forms, see our article on lion's mane dosage. We have a certificate of analysis (CoA) for every batch, which you can request via support@getgoyu.com.
When is lion's mane not suitable?
Lion's mane is not suitable for people with a mushroom or mold allergy. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication, we do not recommend it without first consulting your doctor. Supplements are also not intended for children unless your doctor advises otherwise, and the time of day you take them does not change that.
If you take blood thinners or other medications, or have surgery planned, consult your doctor or pharmacist first. Research on lion's mane mainly consists of small studies lasting a few weeks to a few months.
Summary in 3 points
- There is no research on the best time, so choose a time you can stick to every day, such as breakfast.
- Take lion's mane with a meal if you have a sensitive stomach. In the study by Mori et al. (2009), the daily dose was divided into three servings.
- Follow the daily dose on the packaging and, if you are pregnant, have an allergy, or take medication, consult your doctor first.
