Psyllium capsules or powder: what's the difference?
Short answer: Psyllium capsules and psyllium powder contain the same fibre: the seed husk of Plantago ovata. The difference lies in how much you take in and how convenient it is. According to our labels, you take 4 to 6 capsules a day (2 to 3 grams of psyllium) or 3 to 5 grams of powder. Powder is much cheaper per gram and you can bake with it; capsules are handy on the go. With both, you drink at least 250 ml of water.

At GOYU we sell psyllium husk as a powder and as 500 mg capsules, and we often get asked which form is better. Below we list the differences: how many capsules equal a serving of powder, how much water to drink with it and which form suits you. Exactly how to use the powder is explained in how to use psyllium husk powder.
What is the difference between psyllium capsules and powder?
It is the same fibre in a different form. Our powder contains nothing but ground psyllium seed husk. Each of our capsules contains 500 mg of that seed husk in a plant-based HPMC capsule. The biggest differences are the daily amount, convenience and the price per gram.
| Powder | Capsules | |
|---|---|---|
| What's in it? | Ground seed husk of Plantago ovata, organic | 500 mg ground seed husk per capsule, plus the capsule (HPMC) |
| Per day according to our label | 3 to 5 grams | 4 to 6 capsules, 2 to 3 grams in total |
| Water | At least 250 ml, then another glass | At least 250 ml |
| Taste and texture | Neutral, thickens quickly in your glass | You taste nothing |
| Baking and stirring into food | Yes | No |
| Pack size at GOYU | 300 grams, 60 to 100 days | 60 capsules (30 grams of psyllium), 10 to 15 days |
| Handy for | Home, daily use, baking | Work, travel, on the go |
How many psyllium capsules equal a serving of powder?
For 1 gram of psyllium you need two 500 mg capsules. A serving of 3 to 5 grams of powder therefore equals 6 to 10 capsules. That is more than the 4 to 6 capsules on the label of our capsules.
| Amount of psyllium | Powder | 500 mg capsules |
|---|---|---|
| 1 gram | 1 gram | 2 capsules |
| 2 grams | 2 grams | 4 capsules |
| 3 grams | 3 grams | 6 capsules |
| 5 grams | 5 grams | 10 capsules |
Do not take more capsules than the label says, not even to match the amount of powder. If you want more psyllium per day, choose the powder and stick to the 3 to 5 grams on that label. A teaspoon is not a precise measure: weigh the powder once on a kitchen scale, then you know how much fits on your spoon.
How much water should you drink with psyllium capsules?
Take the capsules with at least 250 ml of water, just like the powder. Psyllium absorbs water and turns into a gel, even when it is inside a capsule. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) mentions at least 30 ml of fluid per gram of psyllium. For 6 capsules (3 grams) that is 90 ml; with a large glass of water you are well above that (EMA, 2013).
So never swallow the capsules dry and do not take them right before bed. The EMA also advises taking psyllium half an hour to an hour apart from other medicines. Drink enough for the rest of the day too. What can happen if you drink too little is explained in psyllium side effects and how much water to drink.
Do you get less fibre from capsules?
Yes, if you stick to the labels. With 4 to 6 capsules you get 2 to 3 grams of psyllium, with the powder 3 to 5 grams. 100 grams of our powder contains 90 grams of fibre.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) considers 25 grams of fibre a day adequate for adults (EFSA, 2010). So psyllium only covers part of that, whichever form you take. Vegetables, fruit, pulses and wholegrain products remain the basis.
Psyllium powder or capsules: which suits you?
- Choose powder if you use psyllium at home every day, if you want to bake with it or stir it into yoghurt or porridge, and if you look at the price per gram. A bag of powder contains 300 grams of psyllium, a jar of capsules 30 grams.
- Choose capsules if you don't like the thick texture of psyllium in water, if you take it to work or on a trip, or if you don't feel like measuring and stirring. Tips for on the go are in psyllium husk on holiday.
- Check first with your GP or pharmacist if you have difficulty swallowing, take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding. The EMA and the French authorities advise against psyllium if you have difficulty swallowing (Compl'Alim).
You can also combine them: powder at home, capsules on the go. Then add up everything for that day and stay below 5 grams, the upper limit on the label of our powder. If you take 4 capsules (2 grams), take no more than 3 grams of powder that day.
If you want to bake with it, you need the powder. Recipes and amounts are in baking with psyllium husk.
Are there psyllium tablets too?
Yes, but we don't sell them. Besides psyllium, tablets can contain excipients, for example to hold the tablet together. So check the label of tablets for how much psyllium each tablet contains, what else is in it and how much water to drink with it. The same rules apply to tablets: plenty of water, not right before bed and apart from medicines.
What should you look for when buying psyllium capsules?
- Plant and plant part: the label should say Plantago ovata and that it is the seed husk (psyllium husk). Whole psyllium seeds are something else.
- Milligrams per capsule: work out how many grams of psyllium you get per day. At 500 mg per capsule that is half a gram per capsule.
- Capsule shell: HPMC is plant-based, gelatine is not. Our capsules are made of HPMC and therefore suitable for vegans.
- Ingredient list: the shorter, the easier to check. Our capsules contain only organic psyllium fibre and the capsule.
- Water and warnings: a good label says how much water to drink with it and who it is not suitable for.
Both forms are side by side on the page buy psyllium husk.

Frequently asked questions
How many psyllium capsules should you take a day?
According to our label, take 4 to 6 capsules once a day with at least 250 ml of water, before, during or straight after a meal. That is 2 to 3 grams of psyllium in total.
How many capsules equal a teaspoon of psyllium powder?
That depends on how full you scoop the spoon. For each gram of powder you need two 500 mg capsules. Weigh your teaspoon once and multiply the number of grams by 2. But never take more capsules than the label says.
Can you open psyllium capsules and add them to your food?
The label assumes whole capsules with a large glass of water. If you want to stir psyllium into yoghurt, porridge or a smoothie, use the powder. It is easier and cheaper per gram.
When should you take psyllium capsules?
Once a day, preferably before, during or straight after a meal. Not right before bed, and half an hour to an hour apart from other medicines.
Are psyllium capsules vegan?
Ours are: both the psyllium fibre and the HPMC capsule are plant-based. For other brands, check the label to see whether the capsule is made of HPMC or gelatine.
