Short answer: There is no official recommended daily allowance for cordyceps, so the packaging of your product is the guide. For our products, that means 1 to 3 grams of powder once a day, 1 to 2 capsules once or twice a day, or 2 extract capsules once a day. The best time has not been studied, and our packaging says to take it preferably during or immediately after a meal.

"How many capsules should I take per day?" We regularly get that question via the chat on our webshop. With cordyceps, the answer varies by form, because powder, capsules, and extract are genuinely different products. Below, I list what is stated on our packaging for each form, and what else you may want to know about timing, food, coffee, and duration.

How much cordyceps per day is normal?

There is no official recommended daily allowance for cordyceps, unlike for vitamins. Each manufacturer therefore puts its own daily dosage on the label, tailored to the form and how concentrated the product is. So two cordyceps products can have very different dosages, without either being wrong.

The daily dosage is the amount the manufacturer recommends per day, and you should not exceed it. So never look only at the number of grams, but always consider the form too.

What is the dosage of cordyceps powder, capsules, and extract?

For us, the dosage varies by form: take 1 to 3 grams of powder per day, 1 to 4 capsules per day, divided into one or two doses, and 2 extract capsules per day. The table shows exactly what is stated on the packaging, plus a simple calculation of how long one package will last.

Product On the packaging Per day (calculated) Lasts (calculated)
Organic Cordyceps Powder (60 g) "Take 1-3 scoops (1-3 grams) once a day with water or a smoothie. Preferably during or shortly after a meal." 1-3 g powder 20-60 days
Organic Cordyceps Capsules 500 mg (60 capsules) "Take 1-2 capsules once or twice a day with water. Preferably during or immediately after a meal." 1-4 capsules (0.5-2 g) 15-60 days
Cordyceps Extract Capsules 400 mg (60 capsules) "Take 2 capsules once a day with water. Preferably during or immediately after a meal." 2 capsules (800 mg extract) 30 days

According to the product page, the extract is 20:1, with 30% polysaccharides. An extract therefore can’t be compared directly with ground cordyceps. See cordyceps powder, capsules, or extract for how to compare them, with a calculation example. Learn what an extraction ratio like this means in double extraction explained.

According to the packaging, one scoop of powder is about 1 gram. For a precise measurement, use a kitchen scale that measures in 0.1-gram increments, since the amount in a scoop can vary.

Is more cordyceps better?

No, that hasn’t been shown. There are no large studies comparing different doses of cordyceps, and the studies in humans are small and short. They also each used a specific product, so you can’t simply apply an amount from a study to your product.

So stick to the daily dose on the packaging, and never exceed it. If you’re unsure, start with the lowest amount on the label. Gradually increasing the dose hasn’t been studied, but this way you can see whether the product agrees with your stomach.

When is the best time to take cordyceps: in the morning or before exercising?

There’s no research identifying the best time to take cordyceps, including around exercise. So choose a time that fits your day. The only guidance on our packaging is to take it during or immediately after a meal.

  • In the morning: mix the powder into your coffee, tea, or smoothie with breakfast. Find recipes in how to make mushroom coffee.
  • Before exercising: is also an option, although this timing hasn’t been studied either. If you do, take it with the meal you eat before your workout.
  • At lunch or dinner: works just as well, since the best time to take it hasn’t been studied either.
  • Twice a day: if you take the capsules once or twice a day, you could spread them out between breakfast and dinner, for example.

I’d simply choose a regular time that fits your day. That way, you’re less likely to forget.

Should you take cordyceps with or without food?

It’s best to take cordyceps with food. Our capsules and extract capsules say “during or immediately after a meal,” while the powder says “during or shortly after a meal.” There’s no research on taking it on an empty stomach.

Mild gastrointestinal complaints, such as abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and nausea, are listed as side effects of cordyceps (LiverTox, 2026). So taking it with food is also the sensible choice if you have a sensitive stomach.

How long can you use cordyceps?

How long you can use cordyceps continuously has not been well studied. The human studies cited by LiverTox lasted about 5 to 14 weeks (LiverTox, 2026). Little is known about use over several years. There have also been no studies on treatment cycles or breaks.

If you want to use cordyceps for longer than in those studies, or if you take medication, consult your doctor or pharmacist. And stick to the recommended daily dose even when using it long term.

Can you combine cordyceps with coffee or other mushrooms?

You can, but these combinations have not been studied. Cordyceps powder has a mild, earthy taste, so you barely notice it in coffee. Do keep an eye on your caffeine intake: according to EFSA, up to 400 mg of caffeine per day raises no safety concerns for healthy adults, and during pregnancy and breastfeeding, up to 200 mg per day (EFSA, 2015).

If you combine cordyceps with other mushrooms, add up the amounts. Our Mushroom Complex contains 100 mg of 20:1 extract from each of four mushrooms per capsule: lion's mane, cordyceps, reishi, and chaga. The recommended use is 1 to 2 capsules, once or twice a day. If you take it alongside standalone cordyceps, follow the recommended dose on both packages.

Who should avoid cordyceps, even at a low dose?

If you are allergic to mushrooms or fungi, cordyceps is not for you. Are you pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication such as blood thinners, blood sugar-lowering medication, or immunosuppressants? Consult your doctor or pharmacist first, even if you stay below the daily dose.

Our packaging states: "Consult your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication, or have a medical condition." Supplements are also not intended for children. If you are due to have surgery or a dental procedure soon, tell your doctor or dentist that you use cordyceps. Find out why in cordyceps side effects.
