Short answer: Chlorella tablets are dried chlorella, a green freshwater alga, pressed into tablets. When buying, check six things: the species, whether the cell wall is broken, how many mg per tablet and per day, an organic label, a certificate of analysis (CoA) for heavy metals and the ingredients list. Take them as the label says: of our tablets you take 3 tablets of 500 mg twice a day with water, during or just after a meal.

At GOYU we sell chlorella only as tablets: on its own, together with spirulina in one tablet, and as a combo deal. In this article you will read how to choose chlorella tablets, how to take them and how they compare with powder and capsules. What chlorella is and whether it is safe is covered in what is chlorella?

What are chlorella tablets?

A chlorella tablet is pressed chlorella powder. The alga is cultivated, harvested, dried and then pressed into tablets. Our Chlorella Tablets 500 mg Organic contain 500 mg of organic chlorella of the species Chlorella pyrenoidosa per tablet. There is nothing else in them: no fillers or binders. A pouch contains 300 tablets (150 grams).

In the EU, chlorella is an ordinary food. Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Chlorella vulgaris are listed in the European Commission's Novel Food Catalogue as "not novel in food" (POL-NF-00240, POL-NF-00242). In France, both species are permitted in food supplements, without additional mandatory warnings (Compl'Alim).

Chlorella tablets or powder: what is the difference?

Tablets and powder contain the same alga. The difference lies in taste, dosing and use.

Tablets Powder
Taste You swallow them with water, so you hardly taste the alga Strong algae taste
Dosing Count tablets, no scales or scoop needed Measure with a scoop
Use With water, with a meal In a smoothie, juice or yoghurt
On the go Easy to take with you Less practical
Ingredients Sometimes with additives to press the tablet Usually just chlorella

If you don't like the taste of algae, tablets are the easiest choice. If you would rather add chlorella to a smoothie, powder is handier. We don't sell chlorella powder. For spirulina, the other well-known alga, we compare tablets and powder in spirulina tablets or powder.

Chlorella tablets or capsules?

A chlorella capsule holds powder inside a shell. That shell is made of HPMC (plant-based) or gelatine (animal-based). With capsules, check how many mg of chlorella each capsule contains and work out how many capsules you need for the daily dose on the label. A tablet has no shell: it is just pressed powder, and in our case just chlorella.

What should you look for when buying chlorella tablets?

  1. The species. The label should state the Latin name, usually Chlorella pyrenoidosa or Chlorella vulgaris. Our standalone tablets contain C. pyrenoidosa, our Spirulina Chlorella Tablets C. vulgaris. Both are permitted in the EU.
  2. Broken cell wall. Chlorella has a cell wall made of cellulose. Your body cannot digest it when it is intact, which is why the cell wall is mechanically broken in most supplements (Bito et al., 2020). Not every label says so, ours included. In that case, ask the seller.
  3. Mg per tablet and per day. Count per day, not per tablet. For us that is 6 tablets of 500 mg, 3 grams of chlorella a day in total. How much chlorella has been used in research is covered in chlorella dosage.
  4. Organic. You recognise organic products by the green EU logo. It must be accompanied by the code of the control body and the origin of the raw materials ("EU Agriculture" or "non-EU Agriculture"), and at least 95% of the agricultural ingredients must be organic (European Commission). Our pouch says NL-BIO-01 and "Non-EU Agriculture".
  5. A certificate of analysis (CoA). Algae can contain heavy metals such as cadmium and lead (Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg, 2025). In the EU, maximum levels for lead, cadmium and mercury apply to food supplements (Regulation (EU) 2023/915). A good CoA shows the measured value for each substance, plus the microbiology. You can request the CoA for our chlorella tablets from support@getgoyu.com.
  6. The ingredients list. The shorter it is, the better you know what you are getting. Binders or lubricants are permitted but not necessary: our tablets consist only of organic chlorella.
  7. Price per day. Divide the price by the number of days a pack lasts. With 300 tablets and 6 tablets a day, our pouch lasts 50 days.

How do you take chlorella tablets?

Our pack says: take 3 tablets twice a day with water, preferably during or just after a meal. That is 3 grams of chlorella a day. Do not exceed this daily dose. When and how much exactly, and what research used, is covered in chlorella dosage: how many tablets per day?

Do you take a blood thinner that works via vitamin K, such as warfarin? Then check with your doctor or anticoagulation clinic first, because chlorella contains vitamin K. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication, consult your doctor first. All known side effects are listed in chlorella side effects.

The EU has not authorised any health claims for chlorella itself. These claims apply to our chlorella tablets:

  • Chlorella is naturally high in protein**
  • Protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass**

**Authorised health claim (Regulation (EU) No 432/2012) or nutrition claim (Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006).

Chlorella and spirulina in one tablet?

Yes. Our Spirulina Chlorella Tablets contain both algae in one 500 mg tablet. If you prefer them separately, there is the combo deal with a pouch of chlorella tablets and a pouch of spirulina tablets. Follow the directions on each product's own label. The difference between the two algae is explained in spirulina vs chlorella.

How do you store chlorella tablets?

Store them in a dry, cool place, out of reach of children. Close the pouch properly after use so that no moisture gets in. Do not use the product if the seal is broken.

Summary in 3 points

  • Chlorella tablets are pressed chlorella. They are easier to dose than powder and you hardly taste the alga.
  • When buying, check the species, a broken cell wall, the mg per day, the EU organic logo, a CoA for heavy metals and a short ingredients list.
  • Of our tablets you take 3 tablets twice a day (3 grams a day) with water at a meal; a pouch of 300 tablets lasts 50 days.

Frequently asked questions

How many chlorella tablets should you take a day?

That is on the label and differs per product. Of our 500 mg tablets you take 3 tablets twice a day, 3 grams of chlorella a day in total, during or just after a meal.

Are chlorella tablets better than powder?

Not better, just different. Both contain the same alga. Tablets are easier to dose and you taste almost nothing; powder can be mixed into a smoothie or juice.

Do chlorella tablets contain binders?

That varies by brand, so check the ingredients list. Our chlorella tablets consist only of organic chlorella, without binders or fillers.

How long does a pouch of chlorella tablets last?

Our pouch contains 300 tablets. At 6 tablets a day, it lasts 50 days.

Are chlorella tablets vegan?

Ours are: they consist only of chlorella, an alga. With capsules it depends on the shell, because gelatine is of animal origin.
