Chaga dosage: how much to take per day and when?
Short answer: There is no official daily dose for chaga, so follow the label on your product. For ours, that’s 1 to 3 g of powder or 1 to 3 capsules once per day, or 1 extract capsule 1 to 2 times per day, preferably during or just after a meal. Because chaga contains oxalate, it’s best not to use multiple chaga products at the same time. If you do, add them all together and stay within the daily dose on the label.

Chaga dosage may seem simple, but powder, capsules, and extract are really different products. One extract capsule is not the same as one powder capsule. Below, for each form, you’ll find what our package says, when to take it, and what to keep in mind if combining products.
How much chaga per day?
There is no officially established daily dose for chaga, as there is for vitamins. That’s why each manufacturer puts its own recommendation on the label, tailored to the form. Below you can see what our label says, along with a simple calculation of how long it will last.
| Form | Per serving | On the package | Per day (calculated) | Lasts (calculated) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chaga powder (60 g, organic) | 1 scoop, about 1 g | 1-3 scoops (1-3 g) once per day | 1-3 g | 20-60 days |
| Chaga capsules (60 capsules, organic) | 500 mg ground chaga | 1-3 capsules once per day | 500-1500 mg | 20-60 days |
| Chaga extract capsules (60 capsules) | 400 mg 20:1 extract | 1 capsule 1-2 times per day | 400-800 mg extract | 30-60 days |
If you’re unsure, start with the lowest amount on the label. Starting low and building up hasn’t been studied for chaga, but at least this way you won’t go straight to the maximum. Never exceed the highest amount on the package.
Why does the chaga dosage differ by form?
Powder and powder capsules contain the whole ground mushroom: 1 g of powder is simply 1 g of chaga. An extract is concentrated. For a 20:1 extract, about 20 g of dried chaga is used to make 1 g of extract, so one 400 mg capsule comes from about 8 g of chaga (400 mg x 20, calculated).
That doesn’t mean one extract capsule gives you the same amount as 8 g of powder. During extraction, some substances, such as fiber, are left behind, while others become concentrated. That’s why we also list the content: 20% beta-glucans and 30% polysaccharides.
So don’t substitute one form for another one-to-one. Read more about the difference in chaga powder or extract.
When to take chaga: with or without food?
All our chaga packaging says the same thing: preferably take it during or just after a meal. Whether chaga is better in the morning or evening has not been studied. Just choose a regular time, for example with breakfast or lunch, so you don’t forget or accidentally take it twice.
- Powder: Once a day with a meal, mixed into your coffee, a smoothie, or hot water.
- Capsules: Once a day with a meal, with water.
- Extract capsules: 1 capsule once or twice a day. If you take 2, spread them across two meals.
Can you take chaga on an empty stomach?
This has not been studied. We follow the advice on the packaging: take it during or just after a meal. That’s also the easiest to remember.
How long can you use chaga?
There is no set duration for a chaga course, and no human studies have established how long you can safely use chaga daily. What is known: the patient reports of kidney damage involved people who took chaga powder every day for months to years.
For example, one woman took 4 to 5 teaspoons per day for 6 months (Kikuchi et al., 2014). A man took 3 g per day for four years, then 9 g per day the following year (Lee et al., 2020). So for the first four years, he simply followed the manufacturer’s advice.
So don’t use chaga in large amounts over a long period. If you use it every day for months, discuss that with your doctor, especially if you have (or have had) kidney problems or kidney stones. Read more about what’s known in chaga side effects.
Can you combine chaga with coffee?
Yes, you can simply stir chaga powder into your coffee. That doesn’t change the dosage: 1 to 3 g per day in total, even if you divide it between two cups. Take capsules with water with your meal, whether or not you have coffee with it.
We found no research in PubMed on chaga combined with coffee. We haven't tested the caffeine content of our chaga powder, so we can't promise it's "caffeine-free." Find recipes in make your own mushroom coffee. For other ways to use the powder, read how to use chaga powder.
Can you combine chaga with other mushrooms or chaga products?
You can combine chaga with other mushrooms such as lion's mane or reishi: follow the daily dose for each mushroom product, and don't add them together as one dose. It's different with other chaga products. It's best not to use multiple chaga products at the same time. If you do, add them all together and stay within the daily dose on the label.
- Mushroom complex: each capsule contains 100 mg of chaga extract (20:1), alongside lion's mane, cordyceps, and reishi. The recommended dose is 1-2 capsules 1-2 times a day. If you also take chaga extract capsules, you may be getting more chaga extract than you think.
- Powder and capsules together: add them together and stay within the recommended amount.
- Powder and extract together: you can't add these up on a one-to-one basis. It's best to choose one.
Can you take too much chaga?
Yes, and this is more important with chaga than with most other mushrooms because of the oxalate. There is no official upper limit. The kidney damage described in patient reports occurred with daily use over months to years, in some cases at amounts of 9 to 15 g of powder per day (Lee et al., 2020; Kwon et al., 2022).
If you've taken more than the amount stated on the packaging and don't feel well, contact your doctor. Then go back to the amount stated on the packaging.
Summary in 3 points
- There is no official daily dose for chaga. Our recommendation: 1-3 g of powder or 1-3 capsules once a day, or 1 extract capsule 1-2 times a day.
- Preferably take chaga during or just after a meal, at a set time. It's fine to combine it with coffee.
- Because of the oxalate, it's best not to use multiple chaga products at the same time. Stay within the daily dose on the label, and talk to your doctor about long-term daily use.
Frequently asked questions
How many chaga capsules should you take per day?
For our 500 mg chaga capsules, take 1 to 3 capsules once a day. For the 400 mg extract capsules, take 1 capsule, 1 to 2 times a day.
Can I take chaga in the evening?
You can. There is no research indicating a best time. However, take it with a meal, as stated on the packaging, for example with dinner.
How long does a jar of chaga capsules last?
A jar contains 60 capsules. At 1 to 3 capsules per day, it lasts 20 to 60 days; the extract capsules last 30 to 60 days (calculated).
Should I gradually increase my chaga intake?
This has not been studied, and it doesn't need to be. It is sensible to start with the lowest amount on the label.
Is 1 gram of chaga powder per day enough?
1 gram is the lower end of the recommendation on our packaging. We can't say what is "enough," because there are no approved health claims for chaga. The recommended amount is 1 to 3 g per day.
