Short answer: Shiitake supplements are usually sold as capsules or powder. Both contain dried, ground shiitake: capsules are tasteless and measured, while powder can be used in hot dishes. Our packaging recommends 2-3 capsules or 1-2 scoops (1-2 g) of powder, once or twice a day, preferably during or right after a meal.

Most people know shiitake from stir-fries. As a supplement, it works differently: it’s about taking a fixed amount per day and knowing exactly what’s in the jar.

Below, I’ll go over the forms available, how much to take per day, when to take it, and what I personally look for when buying.

What exactly is a shiitake supplement?

A shiitake supplement is a dietary supplement containing shiitake (Lentinula edodes), usually as dried, ground mushroom in capsules, tablets, or loose powder. Shiitake extracts are also available, in which certain compounds from the mushroom are concentrated. This is a completely different product from ground shiitake.

On labels, you may also see the older name Lentinus edodes. It’s the same species. We sell shiitake as organic powder and organic capsules, both containing ground shiitake, not an extract.

Shiitake capsules, powder, or tablets: which is right for you?

Choose shiitake capsules if you don’t want to taste shiitake and want to keep things simple, for example at work or on the go. Choose shiitake powder if you often make soup, broth, or stews and want to cook shiitake into your food. The contents are the same: ground shiitake. Shiitake pills or tablets work like capsules, but are pressed into solid form. For tablets, check the ingredients list to see what excipients they contain.

A comparison table of powder and capsules is in our article about shiitake. One thing to consider: raw or undercooked shiitake can cause a rash in some people. You can cook powder into food, but not a capsule. Read what’s known about this in shiitake side effects and why you shouldn’t eat it raw.

How much shiitake should you take per day?

There is no official recommended daily amount for shiitake, unlike for vitamins. So follow the daily serving listed on your product’s packaging. Our packaging states the following.

Product On the packaging Shiitake per day (calculated) Lasts (calculated)
Shiitake capsules (60 x 500 mg) "Take 2-3 capsules with water once or twice a day. Preferably during or just after a meal." 1000-3000 mg 10-30 days
Shiitake powder (60 g) "Take 1-2 scoops once or twice a day (about 1-2 g). Preferably during or just after a meal." 1-4 g 15-60 days

For a quick conversion: one capsule contains 500 mg of ground shiitake. So six capsules, the maximum per day, equal 3 g. That’s about the same as 3 scoops of powder.

When should you take shiitake?

Take shiitake during or just after a meal, as stated on our packaging. It hasn’t been studied whether morning or evening is better, so simply choose a time that’s easy for you to stick to.

  • Once a day: Take your dose with a regular meal, for example, lunch.
  • Twice a day: Divide it between two meals, for example, lunch and dinner.
  • Capsules: Swallow them with water.
  • Powder: Cook it into a hot dish. Find out how in how to use shiitake powder.

Can you take shiitake every day?

The usage instructions on our packaging give a daily dose, so using it every day within that amount is as intended. We haven’t found any long-term studies of shiitake as a supplement: the study below lasted ten weeks.

In a small study from 1998, 10 healthy people took 4 g of shiitake powder every day for 10 weeks. The number of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell, increased in 5 of them, and 2 experienced gastrointestinal problems. These went away after they stopped (Levy et al., 1998).

  • Never exceed the daily dose stated on the packaging.
  • Stop using it if you develop a rash or stomach problems.
  • If you’re having a blood test, tell them that you use shiitake daily.
  • If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication, consult your doctor or pharmacist first, as stated on the packaging.

What should you look for when buying a shiitake supplement?

When buying, check which part of the mushroom is used, whether it’s ground shiitake or an extract, whether each batch is lab-tested, and what else it contains besides shiitake. This information should be on the label or in a certificate of analysis (CoA). For how to read a CoA, see CoA for a mushroom supplement, and for more on what to look out for, read our article about shiitake. We have a CoA for every batch of our shiitake, available on request via support@getgoyu.com.

No health claims for shiitake itself have been approved in the EU. If a product promises what shiitake does in your body, I would be extra skeptical. What is allowed are nutrition claims that match the product's composition. For our shiitake powder and capsules, the following applies: Shiitake is naturally high in protein** and Shiitake is naturally high in fibre**

**Approved health claim (Regulation (EU) No 432/2012) or nutrition claim (Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006).

Summary in 3 points

  • Shiitake capsules and powder both contain ground shiitake. Capsules are tasteless; stir the powder into hot dishes while cooking.
  • Our packaging says to take 2-3 capsules or 1-2 g of powder, once or twice a day, during or immediately after a meal.
  • When buying, pay attention to which part of the mushroom is used, whether it's ground or an extract, whether there's a CoA for each batch, and whether it contains as few additives as possible.
