When should you take lion's mane: morning or evening?

Short answer: No study identifies a best time to take lion's mane (bearded tooth mushroom, Hericium erinaceus). Most users take it in the morning with breakfast or in their coffee because that's easy to stick to. In the best-known study, the daily amount was divided across three times, so consistency matters more than the exact time.

When we started with our powders in early 2023, including lion's mane, they were intended to be added to your coffee, smoothie, or shake. So the timing was already built in. Still, we continue to get questions about it, such as: "Should I take all the mushrooms together in the morning, or alternate them by day?" and "Is it for daily use or only when needed?"

What is the best time of day to take lion's mane?

There is no scientifically established best time to take lion's mane. Studies have not compared morning and evening. So people who take lion's mane choose a convenient time, such as breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

In practice, the best time for you is the one you can easily stick to every day.

Lion's mane is an edible mushroom that has long been used in Asian cuisine. As a supplement, it comes as a powder, capsules, extract, or tincture. No optimal time of day has been studied for any of these forms.

Time Why people choose this Note
Morning Easy to pair with breakfast or coffee Avoid taking it on an empty stomach if you are sensitive to that
Afternoon At lunch, for those who eat little in the morning More likely to be forgotten on busy days
Evening For those who take all their supplements with dinner In that case, don't combine it with caffeinated coffee
Spread throughout the day This is how it was done in the study by Mori et al. (2009) Requires more discipline

Is it better to take lion's mane with or without food?

If you have a sensitive stomach, simply take lion's mane with a meal. Some users report mild stomach issues when taking a mushroom supplement on an empty stomach. No research shows that taking lion's mane with or without food changes how its compounds are absorbed.

A meal is also a convenient regular time. Taking it with breakfast or coffee can make it easier to remember. Read more about stomach issues and other reported reactions in our article on lion's mane side effects.

Is it better to take lion's mane all at once or spread throughout the day?

Taking lion's mane all at once or spread throughout the day has not been compared in research. In the best-known Japanese study, participants took four 250 mg tablets three times a day for 16 weeks. That was one study using a specific product, so it does not prove that spreading it out works better than taking it all at once.

The study included 30 adults aged 50 to 80. Half received lion's mane tablets, and the other half received a placebo (Mori et al., 2009). The tablets consisted of 96% dried fruiting body powder. The fruiting body is the mushroom itself, the part you see growing on the wood.

If you're used to taking it at one regular time, there's nothing wrong with that. Always stick to the daily dosage on the packaging. Read about comparing amounts across forms in lion's mane dosage.

Taking multiple mushrooms or supplements: all at once or alternating?

Whether it's better to take multiple mushroom supplements at the same time or alternate them hasn't been studied. So it's mainly a practical choice. I'd just take them at one regular time, for example with breakfast, and follow the daily dosage on each product's packaging.

That's what I do too: I take our mushroom complex every day during the day, along with my other capsules. If lion's mane is in more than one product, just add the amounts together.

A customer also asked us whether lion's mane can be taken with MCT oil. This combination hasn't been studied. If you also take medication alongside supplements, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Can I take lion's mane in the evening without disrupting my sleep?

Lion's mane itself contains no caffeine, so taking it in the evening is usually not a practical problem for most people. There isn't enough research on any direct effect of lion's mane on sleep to say anything meaningful. Do pay attention to what you combine it with: lion's mane in an evening coffee still comes with the caffeine from that coffee.

If you feel restless in the evening after taking it, move it to the morning. That's a personal choice, not advice based on research.

What's the easiest way to take lion's mane powder, capsules, or tincture?

Powder is easiest to stir into coffee, tea, oatmeal, or a smoothie. Take capsules with water, and add tincture drops under your tongue or to a drink. Which form is most convenient depends on your morning routine, since the timing doesn't change with the form, only the way you take it.

  • Powder: mixes well into coffee, shakes, yogurt, and oatmeal, and has a mild taste according to customer reviews (Judge.me, October 2026). Find recipes in cooking with lion's mane.
  • Capsules: Convenient on the go and odorless. Take them with a glass of water with a meal.
  • Tincture: A tincture is a liquid extract that you measure with a dropper. Learn more about the lion's mane tincture.

An extract is a concentrated form in which compounds are extracted from the mushroom using water, alcohol, or both. Beta-glucans are sugar chains (polysaccharides) from the cell walls of mushrooms, and their content is often listed on an extract's label. Our article on beta-glucans in mushrooms explains how to read this.

Is it a good idea to take lion's mane every day, or should you take a break from time to time?

Whether taking lion's mane daily or with breaks is better has not been studied. Mori et al.'s study (2009) lasted 16 weeks with daily intake, followed by 4 weeks without. There is little data on use beyond a few months, so follow the directions for use and consult a doctor if in doubt.

Some people choose to take a break, for example, for one week each month. This is a personal choice without research to support it.

A break can be a good time to consider whether you still want to use the product. You can read what other users notice after a few weeks in our article on lion's mane experiences.

When does our packaging say to take it?

The packaging does not specify a time, but does recommend taking it around mealtimes. All three recommend one dose per day, while Mori's study divided the daily dose into three servings.

Product When to take it, as stated on the packaging How often per day
Lion's mane powder (60 g, organic) Preferably during or immediately after a meal, in water or coffee Once daily
Lion's mane capsules (60 x 500 mg powder) Preferably during or immediately after a meal, with water Once a day
Lion's mane extract capsules (400 mg, 20:1) Preferably before or during a meal, with water Once daily

The number of scoops or capsules per day listed on the packaging, and how to compare doses across forms, are covered in our article on lion's mane dosage. We have a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) for every batch, which you can request via support@getgoyu.com.

When is lion's mane not suitable?

Lion's mane is not suitable for people with a mushroom or mold allergy. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication, we do not recommend using it without consulting a doctor. Supplements are also not intended for children unless otherwise advised by a doctor, and the time of day you take them does not change that.

If you take blood thinners or medication for blood sugar, or have surgery planned, consult your doctor or pharmacist first. Research on lion's mane consists mainly of small studies lasting a few weeks to months.

Summary in 3 points

  • There is no research on the best time to take it, so choose a time you can stick to every day, such as breakfast.
  • Take lion's mane with a meal if you have a sensitive stomach. In the study by Mori et al. (2009), the daily dose was divided into three servings.
  • Follow the daily dosage on the packaging and consult your doctor first if you are pregnant, have allergies, or take medication.
